Pendulum Swings

I wrote to an FB friend the other day that “Yes, it will take one month to wipe out most of the middle class and lower middle class - already is happening - and one more month to destroy the family units that existed and one month after that to bring them to their knees, to a mental shift in which they will accept a new social paradigm.”. He wrote back, “Scary times indeed. A whole world paradigm shift which I hope will enlighten everyone that we are one with the planet and every creature on it, here to decrease pain and suffering.”

I question the need for so much pain and suffering to get to the point where “we” are one with each other and “we” understand our mandate to decrease pain and suffering. I take the position that we already do. I take the position based on what good I see around the world, what good is being done, the innovations made by some at sometimes extreme sacrifice that only serve others, often with no financial rewards. I see good in people, I see much tolerance in people, more than ever before. I see kindness and charity.

And I don’t see a “hope” realized after millions of livelihoods are destroyed and an equal number of families are devastated. I see resentment brewing instead. I see the cancer of class hatred growing malignant.

There are some who wish for revenge for the wrongs of our grandparents. There has been much intolerance in the last one-hundred years. I have seen in the last fifty of that much of what has now been purged. Fifty years ago the hatred spewing from men and women who headed the families I lived in and was relation to was deafening. Sickening. I was lucky, I spent more time alone in front of the television than I did with my family at the dinner table. The message of tolerance had begun to sing loud over the black and white screens of the mid-sixties. I heard it.

Is the pendulum swinging? Is Covid-19 being used as the excuse to separate and punish? Will the hatred for the injustices of the past become the new reason for generations after us to seek revenge for the injustices this hatred and its actors shape our present?

“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
